WELCOME TO THE STUDIO
Learn to Sculpt Clay by Hand
Discover the art of hand building, a pottery practice that uses only your hands and simple tools to shape clay. This technique empowers you to create a wide range of forms, from functional hand-built pottery, such as slab-built mugs, to sculptural ceramics. Many beginners find it more immediately intuitive than the wheel; no spinning wheel is involved, just you and the clay. Classes take place in the dedicated hand-building area of the South Studio, where individual workstations and a full set of hand-building tools are ready for every stage of your build.

What Is Hand Building in Pottery?
Hand building is any method of making pottery without a wheel, shaping the clay directly with your hands and a few simple tools. It is slower and more deliberate than wheel throwing, not better or worse, just a different way of working with clay. Where the wheel is fluid and spinning, hand building is precise and sculptural.
Slab Building
Roll clay into flat sheets and assemble them into precise forms, ideal for mugs, plates, boxes, tiles, and vases.
Coil Building
Stack and blend hand-rolled coils to build your forms. This historic, flexible technique works best for tall vases, sculptural vessels, and organic designs.
Pinch Pot
Shape clay directly by hand with simple pinching techniques. The most intuitive way to learn how clay moves is perfect for small bowls, cups, and building foundational skills.

ALL ARE WELCOME
Is Hand Building Right for Me?
Hand building is a great entry point for anyone exploring clay, offering an accessible and intuitive start beyond the wheel. It also provides depth for experienced artists, especially those drawn to sculptural work, clean lines, and geometric precision. It's a natural fit for anyone who wants to make functional pieces, plates, mugs, and serving dishes with precise control over shape and form. Wheel throwers often add hand building as a second technique, and the two complement each other well. No experience required; your instructor works with you directly throughout each class.
What You'll Make

The Clay Corner's Hand Building Space
Our dedicated hand-building area in the South Studio is designed for a seamless, efficient workflow, with focused workstations that support every stage of your process. An extensive tool library, featuring molds, textures, cutters, and more, gives you everything needed to create with precision and ease.

What to Expect in a Hand Building Class
Our classes are built for personalized learning in a supportive, non-competitive environment, with a maximum of five students per session. When you book, submit a topic request so your instructor can come prepared. Instructors rotate through the small group to provide hands-on guidance while you work at your own pace. After class, your pieces dry, go through a bisque fire, you glaze them, and they go through a final glaze fire; the full process takes a few weeks.
All Levels in One Class - Here's How That Works
Our hand-building classes bring together students at every skill level in the same session, and it works because each person receives individual, hands-on guidance.
Beginner
You'll focus on the fundamentals like wedging clay, building pinch pots, and creating your first simple forms.
Intermediate
You'll work on coil and slab techniques, building consistent shapes, and adding handles or texture.
Advanced
You'll refine your technique, explore complex sculptural forms, and pursue personal projects with expert guidance.

Hand Building and Wheel Throwing - Why Not Both?
Many of our members practice both hand building and wheel throwing, as the techniques beautifully complement each other. A South Studio membership includes all class types, giving you the freedom to explore every facet of ceramics without having to choose.
